| ENJOY A MEMORABLE SOJOURN |
Many of the guests staying in elegant accommodations chosen by Excitehotels.com will remember the internationally renowned river and the bridge built across it during World War II by the Allied Forces. Located about 4 kilometers from the T.A.T. office on the banks of the Khwae Yai River, the bridge was brought from Java by the Japanese army and assembled by Australian, Dutch and British prisoners of war. The Japanese needed a railway link from Bangkok to Moulmein, Burma and laid a track along the Khwae Noi valley to the Three Pagodas Pass. The bridged was bombed many times in 1945 and it was rebuilt again after the war. The original sections are the curved spans of the bridge. History buffs staying in spacious hotels will remember that 49,000 labourers and 16,000 prisoners died when the bridge and the Death-railway line that leads to Burma was being constructed. Called the Bridge over the River Kwai in Pierre Boulle’s novel and the David Lean film, the Bridge on the River Kwai, both the river and the bridge have acquired more fame.
